Substitute Teacher Permit

Overview

CCESA 2 offers Wisconsin DPI-approved online training for those who want to obtain a Three-Year Short-Term Substitute Permit. This Short-Term Substitute Permit allows individuals to be substitute teachers in Wisconsin’s public schools. While there are several CESA course options in the state, completion of the CESA 2 online training will qualify you to substitute teach in any Wisconsin school.

Individuals must have an Associate's Degree or higher from a US-accredited institution to apply to become a substitute teacher. Previously, applicants were required to have a Bachelor's Degree. The Wisconsin DPI recently changed the requirements to address the substitute shortage in the state.

Your Path to Substitute Teaching

  1. Interested candidates with an associate's degree or higher, enroll in our course by completing the application.

  2. You will receive an email with the course document and access code.

  3. Complete the coursework in approximately 8 hours - at your own pace in a flexible virtual learning environment.

  4. Upon successful submission of coursework, receive your certificate of course completion.

  5. You will need to obtain a digital copy of transcripts verifying your degree - and then can apply (with your completion certificate and transcripts) for your Three-Year Short Term Substitute Teacher Permit via the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) - Cost for the three-year permit is $125.

Many districts are hiring candidates upon successful course completion and the submission of your materials to apply for the Substitute Teacher Permit with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. We suggest contacting the districts where you are interested in subbing to learn about their application process. We also host a database of interested candidates and you have the option of adding your name upon course completion.
