Beyond Phonics: Integrating Morphology into Everyday Literacy Instruction

About this event:

Discover how meaningful word parts can strengthen literacy instruction across grades and content areas. Whether you're a current UFLI Foundations user wondering what comes next or simply interested in strengthening your understanding of morphology, this session is for you.

Join us to explore Word Origins, a structured and systematic morphology program for learners in Grade 3 and above that is featured through UFLI's partnership with Word Origins. Learn how morphology and etymology support reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and comprehension, and why explicit morphology instruction benefits learners across grade levels, including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, adolescent readers, and students who are ready to tackle increasingly complex words.

Throughout the day, Word Origins will serve as a model for the structure and flow of a morphology lesson. While participants will have the opportunity to browse the materials, the instructional routines and research-based practices shared can be applied across literacy programs, whether or not you use the Word Origins curriculum.

Participants will:

  • Build essential knowledge of morphology and etymology and their role in literacy development.

  • Experience a structured morphology lesson while learning practical routines to integrate into everyday instruction.

  • Explore how morphology supports reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and comprehension for a wide range of learners.
